West of Scotland Cup Round One
Yoker Athletic 2-1 Cumbernauld United
Yoker played hosts to Super First Division outfit Cumbernauld united in the West of Scotland cup on Saturday.
Cumbernauld were rightly odds on favourites with the bookies but a few of the home fans had a little flutter on the Whe Ho at 7/2.
After just four minutes it looked to be going to plan for the visitors when a mix up in the Yoker defence saw Cumbernauld through on goal. The speed of the Cumbernauld striker was impressive as was his finishing when he slotted past keeper Ross Clark to put the visitors one up. This was the first goal Clark had conceded in five games but he had no chance with this close range effort. Cumbernauld put pressure on the shocked Whe Ho defence and were unlucky not to score ten minutes later. A cross from Kenny Jarvis was sent goal wards from the head of Cumbernauld’s number nine only to be saved by the in form Clark. Cumbernauld had another good chance shortly after but it was headed over and the Whe Ho survived another scare.
Yoker seemed to take heart from the poor finishing from the visitors and started to make chances of there own. Harry McLachlan sent an inch perfect ball through to James Mclernon who saw his shot well saved by the keeper. The Whe Ho were gaining more possession now but Cumbernauld still looked dangerous when they moved forward. Cumbernauld got a corner just before half time and they should have done better when the cross was missed by the strikers. The teams went in at half time with Cumbernauld deserving their lead but must have been disappointed with the quality of their finishing.
Half Time Yoker Athletic 0-1 Cumbernauld United
Yoker came out stronger in the second half and striker James McLernon was giving the Cumbernauld defence all sorts of problems. It was only five minutes later when Andy Reilly sent over a perfect cross which John Harvey met cleanly with the head. The keeper had no chance of stopping this and the Whe Ho were level. Ten minutes later Jamie Carson sent a lovely pass through to man of the match James McLernon. With still plenty to do he skipped past two defenders and chipped in his trademark finish to put the home side into the lead. Three minutes later McLernon was replaced by Euan Nicolson from the famous Shinty family. Nicolson was soon in action and was involved in an altercation which looked like two kangaroos having a dance.
A few minutes later it was Nicolson who was put through by Mark McManus only to see his shot well saved by the keeper. Big Alistair Murray was having a terrific match against a very strong Cumbernauld centre half. He was unlucky to see his header go over the bar with 12 minutes to go. Cumbernauld used all there substitutes in an attempt to turn things round but were fast running out of time in this match. Cumbernauld were pushing forward and only a terrific tackle from Craig Rooney denied the visitors a late scoring opportunity.
With ten minutes to go Kenny Jarvis was given his second yellow card for dissent and the visitors were down to ten men. This did not help Cumbernauld’s cause and although they continued to press in the last ten minutes Yoker’s defence was solid.
John Brogan was pleased with the victory against a team two leagues above them. He said “although Cumbernauld had chances in the first half we responded well to the early goal I thought we held our own against a very good Cumbernauld side. The pleasing thing for me is that that this was another team effort with everyone working for each other. “.
It’s back to league business on Saturday when the Whe Ho take on Newmains United in the league on Saturday 23rd October, kick-off 2pm.
